Crisp Light Munich Base Malt
Crisp Light Munich Malt is produced from premium two-row barley and undergoes a specialised kilning process to promote Maillard reactions. This results in a malt that is richer and more aromatic than standard pale or lager malts, contributing a deep golden hue and a smooth, “chewy” malt backbone. While it provides a significant flavour boost—recalling toasted bread and light biscuits—it retains enough enzymatic power to be used as a 100% base malt. It is essential for traditional continental lagers but is equally effective when used in smaller quantities to add complexity and golden depth to modern IPAs and pale ales without the heavy sweetness of crystal malts.
Key Benefits
- Rich Maltiness: Provides a deep, bready flavour profile without roasted or burnt notes.
- Enhanced Body: Contributes to a fuller mouthfeel and improved palate weight.
- Versatility: Can be used as a character malt or as a full base for traditional styles.
- Visual Depth: Imparts a vibrant, warm golden-orange tint to the wort.
Applications
- Brewing: Base malt for Märzen, Dunkel, Helles, and Bock. Excellent at 10–20% in IPAs to balance hop intensity.
- Distilling: Used in specialist spirit production to introduce rich, cereal-forward precursors.
- Cider Making: A popular addition to “Graff” to provide a bready complexity and a golden visual core.
Typical Usage
- Rate: 10% to 100% of the grist. Use at lower rates for subtle depth or up to 100% for authentic German lager styles.
