In the golden summer sunlight, a Golden Ale is a great beer to reach for in the heat. Lower in ABV but big on taste! A refreshing beer, quenching your beer thirst with a malty flavour. Fruity, floral, and citrusy notes can be picked up in a beer that is referred to as a ‘gateway’ beer to the world of craft breweries.
In the 80s microbreweries started brewing the Golden Ale style to lure the Lager-drinking masses to their breweries. For brewers this is a simple recipe to make, it ages well, and has more flavour than a lager but is still subtle enough to make you feel like you aren’t drinking a craft beer.
The BJCP describes a British Golden Ale as “A hop-forward, average-strength to moderately-strong pale bitter. Drink-ability and a refreshing quality are critical components of the style. Straw to golden in colour. Good to brilliant clarity. Low to moderate white head. A low head is acceptable when carbonation is also low.
Medium to medium-high bitterness. Hop flavour is moderate to moderately high of any hop variety, although citrus flavours are increasingly common. Medium-low to low malt character, generally bready with perhaps a little biscuity flavour.“
