Crisp Best Ale Base Malt

Widely regarded as the backbone of the traditional British brewhouse, Crisp Best Ale Malt is crafted to ensure even, high-level modification. By utilising specific two-row winter barley varieties grown in the sandy soils of East Anglia and a meticulous kilning process, Crisp achieves a malt with a slightly deeper colour and a more pronounced malty flavour than standard lager malts. It delivers a robust extract with a sweet, biscuity profile and subtle notes of caramel. While perfectly suited to traditional infusion mashing and top-fermented ales, its versatility makes it an excellent base for modern craft styles where a solid malt backbone is required to balance hop-forward profiles.

Key Benefits

  • Consistency: Highly modified for reliable extract and easy, predictable mashing.
  • Classic Flavour: Delivers a quintessential British sweet maltiness with light toasted notes.
  • Low Nitrogen: Sourced specifically for low protein content to aid natural clarity and shelf stability.
  • High Extract: Excellent modification levels ensure maximum fermentable sugars are available.

Applications

  • Brewing: Primary base malt for English Bitters, IPAs, Porters, Stouts, and Barley Wines.
  • Distilling: Used in specialist malt whisky production where a more “ale-like” precursor or specific flavour profile is desired.
  • Winemaking & Cider: Occasionally used in heavy “Graff” (malt-cider hybrids) to provide body and residual sweetness.

Typical Usage

  • Rate: 80% to 100% of the grist. It can be used as the sole base grain or blended with speciality malts.
