Rudolf the Russian Imperial Stout
A very brief history
When Peter the Great fell in love with Stout, in 1698, it was his mission to make this the main beer brewed at The Anchor Brewery of London. The stout referred to the strength of the beer and not the colour and the brewery experimented with strong ales and dark ales the first Porter was brewed in 1721. The Stout Porter was shipped to the Imperial Court of Russia (hence the name) and was thoroughly enjoyed by Empress Catherine the Great (1729-1796)… or so we assume…
20C. Imperial Stout
Overall Impression
An intensely-flavoured, big, dark ale with a wide range of flavour balances and regional interpretations. Roasty-burnt malt with deep dark or dried fruit flavours, and a warming, bittersweet finish. Despite the intense flavours, the components need to meld together to create a complex, harmonious beer, not a hot mess.
